Construction will get underway in the spring on a massive expansion of Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph. The new Lakeland Medical Center Pavilion will include the Hanson Heart Center, named for donors Merlin and Carolyn Hanson and their family. Lakeland Health President and CEO Dr. Loren Hamel talked to WSJM News about the family’s $1.5 million donation, which was announced this week.

“They have had such a heart for supporting worthwhile projects in our community,” said Hamel. “It will be a sincere pleasure to have Lakeland’s new heart center named in their honor.”

At the Heart Center, patients have access to a multidisciplinary cardiac and vascular team including board-certified cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, hospitalists, and radiologists, among others. The new facility will include state-of-the-art procedure and treatment rooms, a cardiac rehabilitation area, as well as nuclear medicine and stress testing exam rooms. Lakeland plans to break ground Wednesday.
