The Michigan House has approved a resolution to ask voters if police should be required to get search warrants before looking at someone’s personal electronic information. The question would appear on the November ballot. Sponsor state Representative Jim Runestad says lawmakers sent the resolution to the state Senate with near-unanimous approval.

“I think it will have the same level support, and then it’s off to the state ballot,” Runestad said. “I believe it will have the overwhelming support of the people of Michigan.”

House Joint Resolution passed the state House on a 107 to 1 vote this week. A similar rule was overwhelmingly approved by Missouri voters in 2014.
