No criminal charges will be filed in the death of a Berrien County Jail inmate. 24-year-old Martell Hadley was found dead in his cell on February 27 of this year. The Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office says he was found hanging by a sheet, and test results show he died as a result of asphyxiation. Since then, the prosecutor has reviewed interviews, pictures, videos, recorded telephone calls, recorded jail visits, and autopsy results related to Hadley’s death. The office has determined Hadley committed suicide with help from no one, with no indication or evidence of foul play from other inmates or jail personnel. Hadley had been in the jail since December, lodged as a parole detainer. The investigation found Hadley had been depressed over a personal matter.
