Pscholka Urges Approval Of Aid For Detroit Public Schools

State Representative Al Pscholka urged members of his House Appropriations Committee to approve a $500 million bailout for Detroit Public Schools on Tuesday. Some are wavering in their vote, partly due to this week’s teacher sick out, but Pscholka said during session says there’s no point in bickering about the district’s problems.

“We’ve heard blame given to Engler, to Granholm, to Snyder, to the legislature, the government, to the teachers, to the parents,” Pscholka said. “Some even blame the weather. Maybe it’s the influenza. It doesn’t matter to me today who’s to blame. Assigning blame doesn’t solve it.”

Detroit Schools is on course to run out of money by June 30 if a plan isn’t approved. The House Appropriations Committee has held several hearings on Detroit Schools. The state Senate approved a $720 million plan for the district in March.
