Congressman Fred Upton is getting angry about repeated efforts to deport Ibrahim Parlak from Berrien County, with the latest coming in a letter from the Turkish Consulate. Parlak has been in the U.S. since being granted asylum in 1991, but the federal government has been trying to deport him for several years. Upton says the letter he received recently from the Turkish Consulate in Chicago is “troubling” and a threat to Parlak’s security and life in Harbert. The congressman is pushing for continued bipartisan efforts in Washington to prevent deportation. Turkey’s Chicago-based Consul General accuses Parlak of being a terrorist and a fugitive, adding allegations he escaped from prison before being granted asylum in America. In December, Parlak was granted a 90-day extension by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to stay in the U.S. and fight his deportation.
