Benton Harbor High School Football Coach Elliot Uzelac has been honored by the city commission. Coach U on Monday was given a key to the city by Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad, who thanked him for making the Tigers’ successful season an inspiration worldwide.

“This small city was impacted, and has impacted the world,” Muhammad said.

Coach Uzelak said he’s just proud of his players for improving not only on the field, but also academically and socially.

“I don’t really believe I’m worthy of this kind of award,” Uzelac said. “The kids did a wonderful job. These young men worked so hard in so many different ways, and that’s why I’m making sure that they have this award. It really is for them more than it is for me.”

The coach added he’s really there to see the players grow into successful men, noting 14 of his 34 varsity players have made the honor role. The key to the city followed the Benton Harbor Tigers’ first ever playoff season. Their story has attracted national attention, with visits to the city from both ESPN and Good Morning America.
