The Berrien County Board of Commissioners this week unanimously passed a resolution asserting its support for all efforts to stop the spread of the Asian carp. The voracious fish is close to making its way into the Great Lakes through channels that lead to the Mississippi River, and scientists warn that it could be devastating to the lakes ecosystem. It grows to be over 100 pounds, and disrupts the native food chain, leading to problems for the fishing industry, among other things. While state lawmakers continue trying to force the closure of the Chicago shipping locks so that carp doesn't get into Lake Michigan, the Berrien County Commissioners, are calling for the State of Michigan to prepare a contingency plan for dealing with the threat. Their resolution says the plan should include -- but not be limited to -- closing fish ladders at dams on the Saint Joseph River. The resolution will now be sent on to various state and federal officials, as well as the Michigan Association of Counties.
