Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Louis Armstrong, Martin Luther King Jr., and Barack Obama... all of these people changed the course of history in our country. To recognize their contributions each year our nation celebrates Black History Month. It started in 1915 with Harvard graduate Dr. Carter Woodson and his dream of bringing awareness to the role African Americans play in history. Like Woodson, Benton Harbor Community Advocate Gladys Peebles Burks believes African Americans played a major role in the nation's history and especially in the civil rights movement.
Peebles Burks says there's an important lesson there for Benton Harbor youth.
Peebles Burks says it’s important for local African Americans to know the strong role they played in Southwest Michigan over the decades.
Peebles Burks lived in Benton Harbor for over 70 years. The 81-year-old former Benton Harbor School teacher now lives with her sister in Stevensville.
