Wetland Restoration Project Underway In Van Buren County

The Van Buren Conservation District has been awarded a grant of over 800-thousand dollars to restore wetlands around the Paw Paw and Black River watersheds. According to the Herald Palladium, the federal money -- which comes through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment -- will be added to local matching funds, bringing the total project's cost to one-point-six million. A coalition of area organizations are working together on the effort, which will involve such measures as small dam construction, land purchases along rivers, and removal of clay tiles in certain parcels. Conservation District officials are still determining which areas along the watershed are the most critical.
