Southwest Michigan Welcomes In The New Year With Two Feet Of Snow

The lake effect snow machine was firing on all cylinders this weekend. Snow blowers, plows and shovels were busy all weekend as the snow kept falling and falling and piling up. Parts of southwest Michigan ended up digging out of 18 to 25 inches of snow. The national weather service reported snow falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour at the peak. Most traffic problems were minor crashes and I-94 and I-196 slide offs, but Van Buren County Sheriff’s department reported a serious injury from a snowmobile accident Friday night. Robyn O’Brien of Kalamazoo had apparently just recently learned to ride a sled.   She accelerated suddenly and struck a pole barn on some private property in Antwerp Township. Police don’t think alcohol was involved but Ms. Obrien was being treated for serious injuries at Bronson in Kalamazoo.
On the other hand police - again in Van Buren County - believe alcohol WAS a factor in a pickup truck that crashed into a ravine off 26th Avenue in Bangor Township late Saturday night. Sheriff’s deputies found a 59 year old man unresponsive and lying in a frigid creek near the scene of the accident. He was airlifted to Bronson in Kalamazoo.
