Watervliet Fire Board Member Resigns Over Call From Township Official

A Watervliet Township Fire Board member resigned this week after getting what she described as an upsetting phone call from the Township Supervisor. According to our reporting partners at the Tri-City Record, Elaine Gaynor says that she doesn't feel comfortable serving on that body after being told that she'd be held responsible if anything went wrong with a controlled burn training session planned by the fire department for December 19th. Watervliet Township Supervisor Dan Hutchins had concerns over the training, and apparently made the comment to fire board members prior to their vote approving it. Gaynor told the TCR that she felt as though she'd been pressured into a position of questioning the fire department's abilities, and instead opted to resign from the board. The fire department's training took place as scheduled with no injuries. Firefighters burned down a building at Main and Butternut Streets to allow for the expansion of the Brookfield car dealership.
