Man In Critical Condition After South Haven Beating

Four people have been arrested in a Van Buren County beating that left a man in critical condition. South Haven Deputy Police Chief Thomas Martin says that around eight PM on Monday, officers responded to the twelve-hundred block of Phoenix Street on a report of an assault. There, they found a 38 year-old Fennville man beaten and unconscious. Witnesses told police that the victim has been attacked by four people, and that at one point during the fight, he was struck on the head with a club. Officers were able to get a vehicle description and license plate number from those witnesses, and used that information to locate and arrest one of the suspects not long after. The three others were found nearby...and although they tried to flee on foot, officers caught two of them, and arrested the other when he turned himself in later. Three of the suspects were arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault with intent to murder. They are 22 year-old Nicholas Logan Brooks, of South Haven...21 year-old Cameron Marc Cole, of Grand Junction...and 18 year-old Charles Alex Soukup the Third, of South Haven. Brooks' bond was set at 250-thousand dollars, while bond for Cole and Soukup was set at 500-thousand. The fourth suspect -- 24 year-old Jeremiah Allen Barnes, of South Haven -- was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of being an accessory after the fact to a felony, and his bond was set at 150-thousand dollars. All four were turned over to the Van Buren County Sheriffs Department. The victim, meanwhile, remains at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo in critical condition. The incident is still under investigation, and police ask anyone with information to contact them.
