Two Paw Paw Men Face Poaching Charges

Two men are facing charges in a Van Buren County poaching case. The sheriffs department says that early on Tuesday morning, deputies were sent to the 46-thousand block of 48th Avenue in Lawrence Township after a woman reported seeing a vehicle shine a bright light into a nearby field before she heard gunshots. Police searched the area, and eventually found a pick-up with a dead deer in the back around the 42-thousand block of County Road 374. The eight-point buck had fresh muzzleloader wounds, and there was a powerful spotlight in the cab. The two 18 year-old suspects -- both from Paw Paw -- admitted to shooting the deer after seeing it run across a field, and they're now charged with taking an illegal deer from a motor vehicle. The driver is additionally charged with possession of an uncased firearm in a motor vehicle. They were lodged in the Van Buren County Jail pending arraignment.
