A Berrien County gay rights organization is warning locals about some hate-motivated attacks that it says have occurred recently at Benton Harbor and Saint Joseph gas stations. The OutCenter's Jennifer Hsu says that on Saturday of this week, an area gay man was approached by someone who apparently wanted to make small talk at a Benton Township gas station. He was then attacked and beaten to the ground as the suspect uttered repeated gay slurs. The Outcenter said in a statement that it's "deeply concerned," and urged "local law enforcement authorities to continue their expedient work on these cases." It also advised people in the local lesbian and gay community to avoid traveling alone, and asked anyone who's been subjected to LGBT hate violence to call 925-8330.
