A fire at the Indiana Michigan Power Benton Harbor substation caused some Coloma Township residents to be evacuated from their homes Saturday night. North Berrien Fire & Rescue officials decided to evacuate 10 houses near the substation on Wilson Road at around 10 p.m. because of excessive smoke. The American Red Cross set up an emergency shelter at Coloma High School for the Wilson Road residents. Emergency workers notified the homeowners by going door-to-door. Firefighters from North Berrien, Watervliet, and Niles Township were on hand at the fire that started at around 5 p.m. Saturday. Indiana Michigan officials don't know what started the fire. The fire didn't turn off anyone's electricity.
