Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski is weighing in on what's going on in Benton Harbor. The State Treasury Department's preliminary review reported on Monday there is a serious financial problem in Benton Harbor. Now a financial review team will dig further into the city's finances to make another recommendation to the Governor Jennifer Granholm. Witkowski is one of seven members of the team. He says he thinks the state of Michigan's overall economy and declining revenue makes situations like this more prevalent.
Witkowski says has experience working with Public Act 72, the state statute that lays out the process for declaring a financial emergency in a local government. He says the Village of Three Oaks went through the same thing last year. Witkowski says the team will start meeting with Benton Harbor officials next week in Lansing.
