The State Treasury Department has released the findings from its preliminary review of Benton Harbor's finances. Former City Manager Richard Marsh requested the preliminary review earlier this year. And State Treasury Spokesperson Terry Stanton says it found serious financial problems in Benton Harbor, because of a variety of problems.
Stanton says the preliminary review's findings suggest the city was told how to solve its accounting practices in the past, but didn't fix them. He says Governor Jennifer Granholm has now put together a financial review team to look at the city's finances further.
Stanton says it's all a part of Public Act 72, the state statute used to determine if there's a financial emergency in a local government.
Stanton says the team has 60 days to file a new report with the governor.
Members of the financial review team include State Treasurer Robert Kleine, Michigan Auditor General Thomas McTavish, Local Government Services Bureau Director Frederick Headen, Kalamazoo Assistant City Attorney Marcia Jones, Berrien County Treasurer Bret Witkowski, Saginaw City Manager Darnell Early and Southfield Councilwoman Linnie Taylor.
