Prosecutor Says Watervliet Officials Didn't Violate Meetings Law

The Berrien County Prosecutor's office says that there's no evidence of any state law violations on the part of the mayor of Watervliet and two city commissioners. According to our reporting partners at the Tri-City Record, Watervliet resident David Flaherty had asked the prosecutor to examine Freedom of Information Act documents suggesting possible fraud and misrepresentation on behalf of Mayor Roger Prince and Commissioners Danny Gray and David Brinker. Among other things, he wanted an opinion on whether Prince had missed more official meetings than are permitted by the city charter, and if the two commissioners had broken the law by holding finance meetings that were not properly organized with the involvement of the city manager. Berrien County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kara Wilkinson told the TCR that she consulted lead county Prosecutor Art Cotter on the matter, and they determined that Prince and the commissioners had not done anything that would warrant a criminal investigation. She did say that it's possible the officials violated the city charter, but that's something that would need to be addressed by the city commission.
