A Hartford woman was killed Thursday in a car crash in Watervliet Township. Berrien County Sheriffs deputies say that 31 year-old Jeremy Birmele was eastbound on Red Arrow Highway when he came upon some construction. Birmele was unable to stop his van in time, so he veered off to the left and into the westbound lane of traffic. He then struck head-on a 93 Pontiac Grand Am driven by 37 year-old Stephen Cordell, of Hartford. Cordell had three passengers -- 37 year-old wife, Tonia...17 year-old son Allen Collins...and 44 year-old Bart Alsup, from Watervliet. All of them were taken by ambulance to Watervliet Hospital. Tonia Cordell was airlifted to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, where she later died. The rest of the victims suffered minor to serious injuries, with the two front seat passengers in the Grand Am having to be cut out of the wreck by the Watervliet Fire Department. The accident remains under investigation.
