Upton: Healthcare Plan Not Certain To Pass



Democrats say they're optimistic about an upcoming health care overhaul vote in the US House. The ten-year, one-point-two trillion dollar plan is designed to extend health coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, and it puts tough new restrictions on insurance companies. President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a personal appeal to rank-and-file Democrats on Saturday, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears confident. However, Republican Congressman Fred Upton says that not everyone is so pleased with the package:

Upton expected to remain in Washington all weekend while lawmakers continued negotiations. The House effort did pick up two major endorsements this week -- from the AARP and the American Medical Association. The bill would provide government subsidies to extend coverage to millions who now lack it, and employers would be required to insure their employees.
