Saint Joe Schools: Flu Absences Held Steady Wednesday

An update from Saint Joseph Schools on the flu situation. According to a district Communications Director Christine Waterhouse, student absences on Wednesday appeared to be holding steady at the three buildings that are still open. At Brown Elementary, there was a 16 percent absence rate...at Clarke, it was 22 percent...and at Saint Joe High School, about ten percent. Superintendent Al Skibbe said that about 20 percent of the students out at the two elementary schools weren't actually sick, but were being kept home by concerned parents, and he's also been told by another ten percent of the parents that they were keeping their children home one more day just to be sure they had recovered from the flu. As of nine AM Wednesday, ten members of the varsity football team were out with flu like symptoms., and Waterhouse said that hopefully, that won't affect play for the Homecoming game on Friday against Portage Northern. The administration also learned that Tuesday of this week can still be counted as a day of school, even though only about 74 percent of the students were in attendance. The school will lose about 900 dollars in state aid because the number did drop below the 75 percent threshold. Lincoln Elementary and Upton Middles School are closed for the rest of the week because of high flu rates, while the rest of the district's buildings will be closed on Friday. MEanwhile, Lakeshore Superintendent Don frank Told us that he still hasn't seen an especially large jump in absences in his district. Updates on the situation will be posted to the Lakeshore Schools website.
