Stevensville May Hire Saint Joe Official As Part-Time Village Manager

Leaders in Stevensville would like to hire Saint Joseph Public Services Director Derek Perry to be their next part-time village manager. On Wednesday, Village President Lori Gibson said that she's been in talks with officials in Saint Joe on the possibility of having Perry come to the village one or two days a week to handle administrative duties in the office. She said that Perry could be a good fit for Stevensville's needs:

Berrien County Treasurer Brett Witkowski, who is acting as Stevensvile's financial manager, says that hiring Perry to help out in Stevensville would be a good move:

He says that given Stevensville's very limited resources, hiring Perry on a part-time basis is the best option. Stevensville is in the process of paying off a debt to the IRS for payroll taxes, and has only 35-thousand dollars a month to spend. Witkowski said that he's working on getting the IRS to waive some penalties and other fees so Stevensville can get back on its feet a little faster, but for the time being, hiring another full-time village manager is out of the question. Stevensville Village Council members on Wednesday approved a resolution to pursue such an arrangement with Saint Joe. The matter could be discussed by that city's board of commissioners at a meeting within the next month.
