The Lincoln Township Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved an environmental cleanup plan for the land where a new Meijer store is proposed near Stevensville. The property on Red Arrow Highway is considered contaminated from its days as an industrial site, and for current owner Leco Corporation to sell it to Meijer, a brownfield redevelopment plan must be in place. Lincoln Township Supervisor Dick Stauffer says that the brownfield concept will enable Meijer to handle environmental cleanup, and then get reimbursed:
As a result, Stauffer says that the new Meijer will result in little direct tax revenue for the township for some time.
The brownfield plan must still be approved by the township's own brownfield authority and the state, but Stauffer doesn't expect many problems there:
The new Meijer could begin construction next year, with the store opening in 2011.
