A special review panel set up to examine issues surrounding a proposed drain project near Three Oaks met this week, and shot down several of Berrien County Drain Commissioner Roger Zilke's assessments for the work. The Herald Palladium reports that the three-member board found many parts of Zilke's cost apportionment to be in error, and reapportioned over 300-thousand dollars of it to other entities, including the state. A number of land owners within the vicinity of the proposed two-point-two million dollar Schwark Drain expansion had protested their assessments, and the review panel reduced their shares by as much as 30 percent in some cases. The paper also reports that panel members went further, questioning the drain project's economic viability. The Board of Review will meet again on September 16th to hear the state's response to its reapportionment. Drain Commissioner Roger Zilke told us that he can't comment on the issue until after that hearing is held.
