Van Buren Deputy Injured By Drunk Driver

A Van Buren County Sheriffs Deputy is expected to recover after he was pinned between his cruiser and another car following an accident with a drunk driver on Friday morning. The Sheriffs Department says that around two AM, deputies were checking a driver for possible alcohol impairment at Delaware Street near Mills Road in the village of Decatur when another car driven by a man described as "highly intoxicated" crashed into their cruiser. Deputy Matt Konkle had been standing near the trunk, and was pinned between the two vehicles. His partner moved the patrol car, and gave Konkle medical attention while they waited for an ambulance. The injured deputy was taken to Bronson Lakeview Hospital for treatment of injuries to his legs, knees, and arms. The Sheriffs Department says that he's in good condition, with no broken bones, and was expected to be released Friday morning. The drunk driver -- a 26 year old white male from Dowagiac -- was not hurt, and he's facing charges.
