A Stevensville teen is in the hospital after an early morning accident Thursday. 18-year-old Gavin Powell was driving on Pipestone Road just north of Hillandale Road, when he lost control of his car, went off the road and struck a tree. Berrien County Sheriff Department Lt. Don Goulooze says that's when Powell's car split in two.
Goulooze says Powell was trapped inside the front half of his car and had to be cut out by the Sodus Township Fire Department. Goulooze says Medic 1 transported Powell to Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph where he is listen in critical condition with head, back and internal injuries.
Goulooze says Powell was on his way back home after visiting friends in Eau Claire. An Off Duty Deputy spotted the crash and alerted police. Goulooze says it doesn't look like alcohol, speed or weather were factors in the crash.
Goulooze says the crash is still under investigation.
