A group of volunteers from the Saint Joseph-Benton Harbor area spent part of their weekend rehabilitating two parks in Niles. Doris Higgins, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Southwest Michigan, says that the group of about 20 belongs to "V-Junction", a new social volunteer organization of young professionals:
The group named their Saturday project the "Playground Crawl." They painted all the equipment at Birkholm Park, and several pieces of equipment on Island Park, as well:
Higgins says that one of those parks is right near the Tyler Refrigeration plant that's laying off hundreds, so the project could have send a supportive message:
The volunteers used grant money from the Cook nuclear power plant to buy supplies. They're already talking about their next project.
