Democratic lawmakers in the state house and senate have introduced legislation aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies. The 15-bill "Prevention First" package also promotes policies that support a family's ability to make responsible health care decisions. The bills address numerous family planning issues, including giving women affordable access to birth control, requiring insurance coverage for birth control, expanding family-planning services, and supporting teen-pregnancy prevention efforts. State Representative Rebekah Warren, of Ann Arbor, says that while abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancy, more teens are choosing to be sexually active and they should be given the information to prevent unwanted babies:
Backers claim that for every dollar spent on family planning services, four dollars are saved on social services in the first year alone. Opponents say the plan will just lead to more abortions.
