Six teachers were laid off in the Benton Harbor school district this week. At a Tuesday meeting of the board of education, Superintendent Carole Schmidt said that the teachers -- who are spread out among several facilities -- have to be let go due to the district's ongoing budget problems. She said that it's never pleasant to cut staff, and she hopes that enrollment numbers can improve enough to allow for the laid off teachers to be brought back. Three board members voted against the action, including Leroy Harvey, who said that he'd like such decisions to be given more committee consideration before votes on them take place. All six of the cut teachers were hired just last year.
