Former President Speaks In Benton Harbor



Former president George W. Bush discussed a wide variety of topics with the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Thursday night. He touched upon everything from life after the White House, to tensions with North Korea, the war in Iraq and the current economic crisis. Audience members say they enjoyed the former President's first major speech since leaving office.

Bush originally planned on answering pre-selected questions, but instead decided to address the audience's questions directly. 10-year-old Saint Joseph resident Andrew Armstrong says he was excited to speak with the former president.

State Representative John Proos was one of the roughly 2,500 people in attendance. He says he thinks, for many audience members, the speech shed a new light on the former president.

While many audience members enjoyed Bush's visit, not everyone was happy about it. About seven people protested outside the venue. Bush left after his speech for Toronto Canada, where he'll join former President Bill Clinton for a joint address.
