The Berrien Springs Village Council voted this week to turn down an anonymous 100-thousand dollar donation to install a footbridge to Rotary Island. The island sits in the Saint Joseph River near the Berrien Springs Dam...and Council President Bill Dustin says that the donation to connect it to the rest of the village was made a few years ago. The council's deadline for taking action on the issue was approaching, and he says that members finally decided now wasn't the time:
He said a variety of factors would have made such an installation cost more than what was included in the donation. For example, certain vegetation on the island would have to be removed before it could be used by the public for recreation...periodic flooding on the island could pose complications...and the police and fire departments warned that it would be difficult to provide emergency services there. While he said the village appreciated the offer, leaders thought it best to focus on other projects.
