Bridgman Teachers Protest Lack Of Contract

Teachers for the Bridgman school district protested their lack of a contract outside of a school board meeting this week. They've been without one since September, although Superintendent Kevin Ivers says that negotiations have made progress, with just a few sticking points left:

He says that changes to the health insurance plan are one thing the district is looking at, but the teachers have rejected a proposal to do so already. Also at Monday's Board of Education meeting, members heard from students concerned about possible plans to switch the district's class scheduling structure from what's known as a "block schedule" -- in which students have fewer classes each day, but for longer hours -- to a standard six-period day. Ivers says that the idea has been floated as a way to reduce spending, especially if negotiations with the teachers don't produce some savings. The school board is to meet on Thursday for discussions on these issues.
