Benton Twp Man Arrested In American Legion Break-Ins

A Benton Township man has been arrested in a string of Berrien County break-ins. Baroda-Lake Township Police Chief Gary Ruhl says that 39 year-old James William Schutze Junior, of Colfax Avenue, was arrested Friday morning and is suspected in several break-ins, including six to American Legion posts around the area in the past nine days. He was picked up around four AM when stopped by Bridgman police shortly after a break in was reported to the Galien American Legion post...and he's been charged with similar break-ins to posts in Baroda and Niles, along with one to Connie's Bar in Baroda. Schutze is additionally suspected of breaking into American Legion posts in Benton Township, Weesaw Township, and Berrien Springs...plus one to the Masonic Lodge in Benton Township. Items including jukeboxes, pull-tab ticket machines, and liquor were stolen, along with cash. Schutze was to be arraigned in Berrien County Trial Court Friday afternoon, and an investigation involving several police agencies continues.
