Heater Blamed For Buchanan Fire

At least five different units were called in to battle a house fire in Buchanan on Monday evening. The blaze started on the 300-block of Berrien Street, near Red Bud Trail. Crews from Buchanan, Bertrand, Niles, and Galien had to battle the fire from doorways and windows because the first floor had already collapsed by the time they arrived. Their efforts were also complicated by the cold weather. One of the hydrants they attempted to use had been frozen shut. A neighbor told WNDU that the fire started because of a Salamander -- a heater -- in the basement. "He was just trying to unfreeze his pipes, basically," according to Victor Aranda. Officials say there was nobody home when the fire began.
