Spotlight: Proposal One

On the ballot next week will be a proposal to make the medical use of marijuana legal in Michigan. Dianne Byrum, of the Coalition for Compassionate Care, says there are thousands of people who could be helped by the plan:

If passed, Proposal One would allow patients to register with the state and to legally buy, grow and use small amounts of marijuana to relieve pain, nausea, appetite loss and other symptoms. They would have to get permission from a doctor.
However, opponents argue that the law would bring about unintended consequences. Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Bill Schuette is among those urging people to vote No. His group, Citizens Protecting Michigan's Kids, says that the law would go further than simply letting sick people feel better. He says it'll lead to more marijuana on the streets, and that protections in the bill to prevent that from happening are not enough:

Medical marijuana is legal in California, and Schuette says police there have a huge problem dealing with things like the pot shop industry that's sprung up around the practice.
