Don Cooney is once again demanding a third debate with Congressman Fred Upton. The Democratic Kalamazoo City Commissioner -- and Upton opponent in next week's election -- has debated Upton twice in Kalamazoo, but he wants a third shot here, around Saint Joe. Upton previously consented in writing to three debates, and since no agreement's been reached on making that happen, Cooney says that he's forcing the issue by scheduling a debate himself at the Citadel Dance Center in Benton Harbor at seven-30 this Thursday -- with, or without, Fred Upton:
Upton Campaign Manager Liz Garey says that the reason why there hasn't been a third debate is that no viable organization has come forward to host one. She points out that previously-scheduled debates were canceled by the parties behind them -- including WSJM -- and calls Cooney's latest action a "disingenuous political stunt". Thursday's event is to be hosted by the Berrien County Democratic Women. The Cooney campaign says that it will find a neutral moderator to oversee the proceeding, should Upton choose to appear.
