A Coloma Township man who pleaded No Contest to child abuse for severely beating his infant daughter was sentenced to life in prison on Monday in Berrien County Circuit Court. Berrien County Prosecutor Art Cotter says that 35 year-old Jason Scott Ward was arrested in August when his six-week old daughter was brought to a local hospital with broken legs, arms, fingers, ribs, and a fractured skull...and he thinks that Ward got what he deserves:
First degree child abuse usually carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison...but Cotter says that habitual offender status for Ward made him eligible for life. Both Ward and the baby's mother had their parental rights to the girl terminated by the court, and she's reportedly recovering in foster care. Both parents have a history of meth use.
