A Coloma man was honored by the AARP last week with its 2008 Shining Star Award. Don Hafer teaches a drivers safety class for seniors in Berrien County, and he was one of just eight AARP volunteers to receive the honor at a ceremony in Dearborn. He says it was nice to be recognized:

Don's taught the driving course for about eight years, with a goal of refreshing seniors on the rules of the road, and keeping everyone safe. He also runs a program called "We Need to Talk", which is like an intervention designed to convince some seniors to give up their licenses when it's become clear they're just not fit for the road anymore. He says he looks forward to working with the AARP on public safety issues well into the future.
