Lakeland HealthCare is joining the Cancer Research Consortium of West Michigan. There are 11 hospitals and healthcare systems in the alliance, aimed at bringing the highest level of clinical trials from the National Cancer Institute to the area. The consortium was notified on August 1 that the NCI had designated it as a National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program, which provides $1.9 million in grant money for the group over the next five years. That cash will provide new cutting-edge clinical cancer trials and complete existing trials for over 1,800 patients. CRCWM is one of just 46 community sites picked from applicants nationwide.
