Gov. Snyder Confirms Financial Emergency In BHAS



Its official, a financial emergency exists within Benton Harbor Area Schools. Governor Snyder confirmed Tuesday his determination made August 11. The school district now has seven days to select one of four options to address the financial emergency. Last week the school board requested to enter into a consent agreement with the state.

Terry Stanton with the Michigan Department of Treasury says once another resolution is passed for the desired agreement, 30-days would be given to allow for negotiations. The agreement would contain different benchmarks and goals for the district. Snyder says "it's important we work collaboratively with school leaders to resolve the emergency." The district currently faces a $15-million deficit.
