Sign, Sign, Everywhere A Sign

When it comes to signage, downtown St. Joseph merchants along the 400 block of State Street are being given a pass. The City Commission voted Monday to allow those businesses the same rights as businesses along side streets. Where as they can, for the time being, place sandwich boards on the corner to direct traffic to their business. Lynne Christiano of Purely Michigan says customer traffic is sometimes non-existent along State Street near her store.

It was either request a sign on the corner to direct customers down the street, or continue using signs out-front of the store.

The Downtown Development Authority is currently working to address the need for directional signage at downtown street corners. City Manager Richard Lewis says they're hoping to have those installed before next spring. Money has been set aside to install them, but design and logistics still need to be figured out.
