Life Rings Working At Silver Beach

Worth every penny. That's the feeling of Berrien County Commissioner Jeanette Leahey concerning the life rings that have been installed this year on the South Pier at Silver Beach County Park after they were used to save several lives in July.

In a letter to the county board, U.S. Coast Guard officer-in-charge Wes Haslam says two rescues happened so quickly by people on the pier that they didn't even have to make case files. Haslam adds the people who were saved were pulled out of the water faster than they could have arrived on the scene. There were members of the public vocally opposed to adding the rings due to the cost, but Haslam says at least one person would have drowned last month without them.
