New MedReturn Drug Collection Units Installed In Four More Berrien County Locations

There are four more MedReturn drug collection drop off sites in Berrien County to go along with existing locations in St. Joseph, New Buffalo and Niles. Berrien County Health Department Substance Abuse Prevention Supervisor Kerri Teachout tells us people can dispose of nearly any excess and expired prescription along with over-the-counter medicines in the boxes.

New locations are Buchanan, Chikaming Township, Coloma and Watervliet. The MedReturn boxes are in police departments in all seven communities. Teachout says getting unused and unwanted prescription drugs out of medicine cabinets and into the state incinerator is important to battle drug abuse.

It's only surpassed by alcohol and marijuana. Teachout says by being located inside police departments, the drop-off locations are safe and are unlikely to be broken into by junkies looking to get high off the medicines.

The drop boxes are emptied daily, with the pills eventually being incinerated by the state after first being transported to a lab at Andrews University. Teachout says they have been popular, with one of the new locations collecting several pounds of pills just days after being set up with no promotion.
