Upton Defeats Bussler In GOP Primary

Congressman Fred Upton is moving on to the general election in November with a victory in Tuesday's primary over challenger Jim Bussler of Dowagiac. Upton is seeking a 15th term on Capitol Hill, and talked about his priorities moving forward.

That healthcare initiative is a bipartisan bill that involves working with the FDA, National Institute of Health, university researchers, disease groups and more.

He will take on Western Michigan University professor Paul Clements in November. Clements is coming into the election with more money than any Democrat to challenge Upton, but is still far behind the incumbent. The Democrat has been running television ads for the past week in the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo TV market. Congressman Upton also talked about the chances for Republicans to take control of the U.S. Senate in November. He would not directly say if he thinks Republican Terri Lynn Land can defeat Democratic Congressman Gary Peters in November, saying most voters in Michigan aren't yet focused on that race. But he does see opportunities nationally for his party in the Senate.

Upton says if the Republicans take control of both chambers of Congress, the challenge will be to govern along with President Obama.
