Berrien County Commissioners Survive Primary Challenges

All the incumbents seeking another term on the Berrien County Board of Commissioners will be on the November ballot after surviving primary challenges on Tuesday. In Benton Harbor, Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough defeated Lisa Gulley and Commissioner Marletta Seats won over Joseph Taylor. In the 6th district of Royalton, Lincoln, St. Joseph and Sodus townships, Commissioner Jeanette Leahey beat challenger Bernd Krebs by a nearly 60-to-40 percent margin. The rest of Lincoln Township will continue to be represented by Deb Panozzo, who beat Republican challenger Chad Clement, 791-611. County Commissioner Jim Curran in Niles also held on to his seat, as he's not being challenged by a Democrat in the general election, with a win over Rick Briand.

In the race for the open seat in the 5th District, which includes the city of St. Joseph and part of St. Joseph Township, Bill Chickering defeated David Yardley in the Republican primary, 732-361 and will face Douglas Elliott in November.
