BHAS Is Ready For Consent Agreement, Dismiss EM Rumor

For nearly nine months the Benton Harbor School district has prepared to enter into a consent agreement with the state of Michigan. Superintendent Dr. Leonard Seawood says that could officially happen by month's end.

Governor Snyder has until Monday to decide if the school system is actually in a financial emergency.

Seawood says a consent agreement with the state would bring together two facets of the district.

He hopes the agreement would be similar to the one currently in place in the Pontiac School District.

Benton Harbor Area Schools face a $15-million deficit. Seawood stresses the district has not discussed the acceptance of an emergency manager. Making cuts is no longer an option. He says the district could not function properly if more cuts were made.
