South Haven Weather Buoy Deployed

A new, high-tech weather and wave monitoring buoy has been deployed into Lake Michigan. The City of South Haven says the buoy is about two miles offshore. It’s part of a growing near-shore network of buoys currently deployed between Ludington, Michigan and Michigan City, Indiana. The system is meant to increase boating and swimming safety along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The buoy was provided by a $50,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association with several local governments, businesses and organizations pledging to pay for the annual maintenance. Similar buoys can be found near Muskegon, Holland, Grand Haven, and St. Joseph. The South Haven buoy will fill a 70-mile wide gap in the present buoy stations. Data collected by the buoy can be found by clicking the link provided.
