City Commission Votes To Settle Former Building Inspector's Lawsuit

It's been over three years, but Barney Martlew of Portage may get his pay-day from the City of Benton Harbor. The City Commission voted Monday to settle a lawsuit filed by the former building inspector.

City Manager Darwin Watson says over $75,000 will settle the suit. Martlew wanted money owed for work-in-progress when his contract was terminated in January of 2011 by former Emergency Manager Joseph Harris. The Berrien County Circuit Court ruled the next year that Martlew was entitled the full amount of pay requested. Since the Commission's vote affects finances, the Benton Harbor Receivership Transition Advisory Board will take this matter up at a future meeting.
