Four-Year-Old Vandalia Girl Dies From Crash Injuries; Was Not In Car Seat

The Cass County Sheriff's Department is continuing to try to determine what caused a fatal accident Monday afternoon just east of the intersection of US-12 and Old 205 in Mason Township. The head-on crash had claimed the life of four-year-old Adrianna Chanthavongsavath of Vandalia, and sent both drivers to different hospitals. The little girl was not in a car seat and died at South Bend Memorial Hospital of her injuries. Her mother, Linda Chanthavongsavath, is in stable condition at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, while the driver of the pickup involved is in critical condition at South Bend Memorial. He has been identified as 73-year-old Edwin Powless Jr. of Otsego. While investigators don't know yet what caused the crash, they do not believe alcohol played a role.
