The trial of Benton Township activist Edward Pinkney will start as scheduled. He had sought a delay in the proceedings, but the "Herald Palladium" reports Judge Charles LaSata denied the motion. Jury selection will begin on July 17, with the trial set to start on July 21. Pinkney faces five felony charges related to allegedly changing the dates on recall petitions against Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower. He also faces six misdemeanor charges in the case. Pinkney's defense attorney is working on filing appeals to delay the trial or get the charges dismissed. The charges stem from dates on recall petitions allegedly being changed to fall within the 60 day window required from the time a petition is signed to the date it's submitted. The 60 day deadline for some of the first signatures fell on days when Berrien County government offices were closed for a snow emergency.
